The hand in Revelation

I clipped this list from my Forthright article today since it interrupted the flow of thought. This is an incomplete list but gives one an idea of the use of the concept of the hand in the book of Revelation, together with the text analyzed in the link above.

  • The Lord Jesus holds seven stars in his right hand, Revelation 1.16, 20; 2.1, a sign of his authority and powerful involvement among the seven churches of Asia.

  • The Lord places his right hand upon John, who is overwhelmed by what he sees, to reassure and comfort him, Revelation 1.17.

  • In the right hand of God on the throne is a book with seven seals, Revelation 5,1, 7.

  • The evil side also mentions hands: The beast “causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead” Revelation 13.16; 20.4.

  • The great harlot “had in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality” Revelation 17.4.

  • John saw “an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand” Revelation 20.1.
